Day for good 2022

At the Ambury Park Centre for Riding Therapy

December 1st, 2022 marked our second annual ‘Day for Good.’ The wider James Dunlop Textiles team came together to activate our culture and values by volunteering at the Ambury Park Centre for Riding Therapy in Mangere Bridge Village.

Established to assist people with physical, psychological, and emotional disabilities, the Ambury Park Centre have grown to offer a riding therapy service, a secondary school, and a vocational programme which supports people aged 18+ through the transition to independent living.

Students learn in an interactive environment, unlike a traditional school environment which lacks the resources to cater for their diverse needs. Engaging with the horses, students learn what it takes to work with another being, understanding their physical and emotional needs as it’s been broadly theorised that horses are capable of understanding and reflecting human emotions.

The growth that their students experience is prodigious as the staff aim to work one on one with each individual. However, with limited time and resources to complete the necessary background work on the farm, the help of the volunteers is invaluable.

Our team worked alongside Ambury staff to complete a variety of jobs around the farm. Getting hands-on and stuck in, from fixing fences and cutting carrots to cleaning the water troughs and clearing the paddocks of manure – not to be confused with a dirt pile. We tidied up their gardens removing weeds and trimming back the overgrowth in preparation for the upcoming prizegiving, and will continue working with the centre to redesign its entranceway to create a more inviting and user-friendly space.

It was a day of collaboration and connection, and an opportunity to continue to give back to our local community.
