Canvas is a boutique co-working space located within the new Tribune Precinct in Hastings, New Zealand. Owner Alice Sip sought to design a unique space which deviated from the aesthetic of a traditional corporate office, instead presenting a modern workspace exuding serenity and a sense of ease.

Alice collaborated with interior designer Toni Gale of Tones & Co. who previously designed soft furnishings for the adjoining contemporary event venue Atrium, visible through the glass wall, which features sheer curtains in our extra-wide-width Seaview by James Dunlop. An existing unpolished concrete wall dictated the palette of muted olive and moss greens, paired with dark pieces of wooden furniture.

“The brief for the co-working element was to create a feeling of community while having the option of a private or ‘wall facing’ space for those who don't like to work with others so closely,” says Alice. To complement Alice's selections for both the fitout and furniture pieces, Toni specified Zepel's signature dry cotton Lux Velvet in the calming Moss colourway alongside James Dunlop’s fire retardant Broadline lining.

“The space came with a raw concrete wall, from which Alice chose muted hues of olive and moss with dark wood – black for the tables and rich walnut for the kitchenette.”

“The large velvet curtains were chosen to soften the conference room, enhancing the acoustics for those hiring the space as well as privacy for meetings. The velvet is heavy weight, so it has helped immensely with the sound quality and really softened the whole space, both acoustically and visually,” says Toni.

"Alice owns a furniture sourcing business, so she found the furniture she loved first and built the design from there. It was important to her that the communal tables felt more comfortable that standard office furniture, so these are converted solid wood dining tables in rich tones which offer a feeling of warmth, as if you were working at your home dining table.”
