Hermitage, Aoraki Mount Cook

The iconic, 130-year-old Hermitage Hotel at Aoraki Mount Cook in New Zealand’s South Island was renovated in 2023 by Outline Design. Having worked together on previous hotel projects, Outline Design were the natural choice to refresh the 60 rooms, lift lobbies, and common areas within the Hotel’s Aoraki Wing.

The interior design took inspiration from the mountainous terrain, glaciers, and Department of Conservation huts found throughout the national park. “The design aimed to enhance the experience of the Hermitage by bringing the spirit of the landscape inside,” says interior designer Victoria Wilkes. “Informing the design language for the ground, vertical applications, joinery, and furniture to create an enriching experience for visitors and reflect the impactful landscape in the hotel’s interior.”

The design language was illustrated further by the layers of texture and tone within the fabrics and colours specified. “Some drew inspiration from the volcanic, textural, and evolving walking track while others reflect the geometric and impactful yet subtle tones in the mountain’s terrain.”

“With such a breath-taking view the palette needed to complement the landscape.” Soft to deep pinks accent smaller ottomans and artworks, while vibrant throw pillows in Cuddly colour Peacock pair with sage coloured throws and a variety of textural silica-greys ground the room – from bed bases in Cairo to sheer and blackout drapes in Lucidity and Kennedy.

To sit back and admire our magnificent Aoraki, “Mantilla fitted perfectly into our finishes palette and tied the many tones we were working with together. The texture reminded us of a rockface and the way surfaces in that environment pick up and reflect cool and warm tones. In the end, it looked as though the room became an extension of the fabric.”
