PappaRich engaged Auckland-based studio Hellospace to design the interior of their latest restaurant, located in Christchurch’s Westfield Riccarton.

Experienced in designing hospitality and retail spaces across New Zealand, lead designer Bridget Taylor transformed the 300sqm space into a modern and inviting restaurant which spoke to their brand identity whilst adhering to the functional requirements of a busy shopping mall.

A variety of design elements were utilised to reflect the brand's Malaysian origins, including the brass accents and green tones found throughout the space. “These colours were used to add warmth and character … The brass elements add a touch of luxury and sophistication, while the green tones add a sense of freshness and nature,” says Bridget.

Verdant shades of green envelope the space; from the teal painted ceiling to the indoor plants and emerald and forest green upholsteries. “The green tones in the fabrics helped to reinforce the brand's identity while also creating a calm and inviting atmosphere for customers. Additionally, the earthy tones in the fabrics helped create a natural and organic feeling, which was in line with the brief's desire for a refreshing and relaxing environment.”

The colours were chosen to reflect the brand's identity and Malaysian origin, while also creating a welcoming and relaxing environment for customers. The final result is a space that feels natural and organic, yet vibrant and full of life.

The expansive banquette seating adds interest to the space via its upholstery, Gala by James Dunlop FibreGuard, a transitional textile featuring a woven chevron pattern in a graduated green ombre. Tying the scheme together are chairs and booth-style seating upholstered in Tanning by Zepel, a soft imitation leather with a predominately PVC composition and a natural-looking finish. Both are ideal in a high-traffic restaurant environment because of their durability and easy-clean properties; however, the fabrics also offer texture and warmth to the space, softening the overall design.

Sections of the Hathi Panel by Casadeco, a tropical wallpanel featuring an elephant beneath the palms, have been cleverly framed to sit as artworks along the wall, bringing cohesion to the concept and transporting customers to a different place and time through an additional nod to Malaysia's landscape.

This Malaysian connection is further illustrated by the woven baskets which function as lampshades, the handmade tiles, and a terracotta counter, completing the design with a sense of authenticity and tradition.
