Re-designing Mental Health

Re-centre, a boutique medical facility in Auckland, opened its doors in early 2020 and continues Klein architect’s ‘wellness in design’ ethos, further exploring holistic ways of delivering high quality healthcare and improving New Zealander’s health outcomes through good design.

Tapping into an under-explored part of the mental health system, Evolution Healthcare and Acurity Health Group joined forces after identifying a gap in the market.  Their vision - a private mental health clinic that does not fit into any traditional mold, however offering an alternative to the cold and clinical notion of a psychiatrist visit.

In late 2018, Klein architects were engaged to carry out a feasibility concept study for a new-look ‘mind health’ outpatient facility. The brief was for a calm and peaceful environment that enables people to feel at ease and relaxed in a much less clinical setting than traditional mental health facilities. The interior fit out was to be balanced between homely comfort and high-end luxury, allowing clients to feel they were somewhere special, yet not outside of their comfort zone.

Re-centre’s model of care, characterised as high tech and professional delivered in a casual and friendly manner, provided the inspiration for the interiors.  This has been successfully reflected in the spatial arrangement and design of the centre – swapping rigid waiting room chairs with stylish domestic furnishings; hard lines with gentle curves and soft planting.

“The fabrics brought a warmth and softness to our spaces and helped to lessen the harder defining elements of darker metal, gold, and stone-look materials and textures of the design"

Fabrics from James Dunlop Textiles, including their specialist healthcare fabric FibreGuard, were selected purposely for their durability in a commercial application. The colour palette of soft blue, greens, warm neutrals and mineral shades provided a graceful elegance to complement the other interior furnishings.

“The fabrics brought a warmth and softness to our spaces and helped to lessen the harder defining elements of darker metal, gold, and stone-look materials and textures of the design,” says Jo Clayton, Senior Interior Designer.

The resulting environment is neither bold nor aggressive, and it’s this understated yet charming palette that creates a soothing, sympathetic setting for health and well-being. The idea of choice and comfort was key to this project – utilising environmental cues to put people at ease, they can let go of their apprehension and worries, setting the scene for frank and meaningful exchanges.
