Ripples Chowder Bay is nestled into the Clifton Garden Reserve of the Sydney Harbour National Park. A 19th century submarine miner’s depot turned restaurant; the heritage listed site pairs a taste of the Mediterranean with expansive views of the Harbour and Eastern Suburbs.

“I had the privilege of being engaged as an interior design consultant to elevate the ambiance of an already charming waterfront restaurant,” says Larissa Orso of Larissa Leigh Interiors. “Our focus was on revitalizing the furniture and décor, as well as refining the joinery to craft a space that feels uniquely inviting and engaging, particularly within the historic charm of the heritage building.”

As this treasured harbourside gem was once a place of relaxation and luxury at the heart of Sydney’s recreational playground, its unique history both inspired the design and dictated the colour palette.

“I had to work within the heritage colours already established by the venue. So, with a neutral and classic base I found opportunity to add depth through colours and patterns in the accessories and furniture.”

Duck egg blue curtains in Sakura by James Dunlop form a soft backdrop to the space, at home amongst an array of antique-inspired furniture, found and curated artworks, and the honey-glow of the lighting. Selected for their playful sensibility, “I was looking for motifs that represented a heritage appeal with a fun approach,” says Larissa.

The interior layout was redesigned around the original timber framing, columns, and an historic spiral staircase within the main dining room which originally connected the miner’s workshop to their storage chambers. To ensure a comfortable experience for every guest, the redesign sought to create a seamless transition through the bar, lounge, dining, and alfresco areas.

Outdoors, rattan dining chairs upholstered in bold stripes and embroidered florals surround marble tables, completing the atmosphere of traditional charm and contemporary elegance found at Ripples Chowder Bay.
