The James, The Langham Sydney

Designed as a confident counterpoint to SRG Hospitality’s existing portfolio, The James establishes a distinct identity while remaining intrinsically tied to its setting within The Langham Sydney. Conceived as a modern British restaurant interpreted through an Australian lens, the space balances heritage cues with a sense of ease and sociability.

From the outset, the ambition was clear. “The James was never intended to feel like a duplicate of one of our other venues,” explains Perry Drakopoulos, Managing Director of SRG Hospitality. “It would hold its own identity but also still sit comfortably within The Langham.” That duality is expressed through a layered interior that favours character over polish, with moments of playfulness offset by restraint.

“We didn’t want to replicate traditional English interiors, rather reinterpret them in our unique SRG way,”

The design draws on the legacy of the hotel and its namesake, Sir James Langham, without resorting to pastiche. “We didn’t want to replicate traditional English interiors, rather reinterpret them in our unique SRG way,” the designer notes. References to Victorian detailing appear in stripped-back joinery, skirting tiles and deeper timber tones, reassembled to feel contemporary and lived in.

Colour plays a central role in shaping the mood. Deep burgundy, forest green and tobacco create intimacy within the dining room, while restrained touches of The Langham’s signature pink subtly reinforce the connection to the hotel. “Rather than compete with the lighter, more classical Langham interiors, The James offers contrast,” says the designer.

Textiles contribute to the sense of warmth and accumulation. Layered upholstery, including Mokum’s Ottica on chairs and booth seating and James Dunlop’s Snugly on banquettes, sits alongside cushions by Zinc and a statement sofa in Madison Authentic by Designs of the Time. Together, these elements soften the space acoustically and visually, reinforcing the idea that The James is not defined by a single gesture, but by the considered build-up of detail over time.
