Benson Road Residence

This stately residence in Remuera, Auckland, had earnt a transformational renovation after earlier alterations resulted in narrow corridors, living spaces facing the wrong way, and an abundance of doors. The clients, a busy family of five, sought an open and inviting home with areas where adults and teenagers could interact or retreat easily.

The brief for interior designers, Tomi Williams and Alex McLeod of at.space, was to provide a spatial review of the architectural plans including the interior and exterior finishes, soft furnishings and lighting throughout all spaces.

“Having worked with this client before we understood how we could push boundaries and in doing so create favourite features and spaces. These include the herringbone tiled wall in the living room and a dedicated bar alongside the kitchen and dining area. The result is a glamorous and sophisticated interior that reflects the clients completely.”

Kirkby Design

To reinstate the original charm and classic details of this large Tudor style home, the client envisaged a touch of Cape Cod. The colour palette is formed on a neutral white foundation, accented by Dulux’s Goydor Green and Boulder Bay, with simple decorative brass light fittings throughout. These layers of soft teal, greens and blues provide depth and interest throughout the living spaces and upstairs bedrooms.

Through “our initial creative brainstorming we had come across a number of images of classic homes with a modern edge-ness to them. We were drawn to creating an interior aesthetic that was fitting to the style of the home but also worked with the interiors of now and beyond."

“The fabric selections were crucial to introduce texture and depth to the classic interiors, but they were also used to define the various spaces throughout.” Linen curtains in teal Satori Stonewash by Mokum provide softness, warmth, and a casual-ness to the grand 4m stud.

Central to the large open plan living space is the kitchen island; a strong, dramatic centrepiece. Modern textures bring cohesion to the design, beginning in the kitchen where a custom bar area boasting decorative wallpaper and a seat padded in Kirkby’s plush 3D triple-quilted Cloud fabric exudes glamour.

The tiled herringbone living room wall leads into the media room where the couch is made-up in Kirkby Beam. A contemporary twist on a traditional woollen upholstery, it is complete with a stain-repellent finish to ensure it is durable enough to accommodate teenage boys and their friends.

In the formal front lounge the deep coloured walls foster a sense of escapism. Designed as a retreat for the adults, the teal walls are softened by Lux Velvet curtains and Zinc Jacopo covering the window seat, creating a luxurious setting from the walls to the upholstery.
