Bismarck House, Bondi

Situated at the top of the hill between Bondi and Tamarama along Sydney’s iconic seaside is Bismarck House. An urban oasis designed by Andrew Burges Architects for Julia and William Dangar, and the location of Mokum’s Surface and Surface Outdoor collection photoshoots.

Architecturally, the design reimagines what a 20th century semi-detached villa can be and was deeply influenced by the surrounding environment. Prioritizing ventilation and capturing the north-easterly breezes during Australia’s hot summer months.

Unlike many projects, this house was built to complement the garden, not the other way around. Designed by homeowner and landscape architect William Dangar of Dangar Barin Smith, “the garden is an abstract arrangement of hardy, interesting plants which complement the quirky architectural details. For example, the scoops in the architecture allow for windows of light and hidden courtyards,” says Julia.

The garden forms a continuous boundary along the laneway, creating a fluid relationship between the interior and exterior spaces and framing a central Bismarck Palm within the cactus garden, which also gives the property its name. The garden’s palette and materials are intentionally “industrial and raw, there’s lots of texture with a robust nature; we always designed this house as a space to share with like-minded guests.”

“We loved the way Bismarck House integrated a contemporary home with an arid, naturalistic landscape. The cactus garden particularly resonated with the Surface collection, reflecting the New Mexico desert through an Australian lens.”

“The project brief was very loose,” says Julia. “It’s a typical semi in terms of the land shape, but we wanted it to be playful as the northern aspect of the land runs along the length of the laneway – this allows natural light to flow through the dwelling.” Taking cues from its placement the home is modern and industrial, Julia notes that “the design is unfussy with subtle detailing and the beauty of Bismarck House is in the way the raw, robust finishes experiment with unusual materials.”

The strategic incorporation of texture into the hard construction materials reflects this idea. The soft curves of the whitewashed reclaimed brick walls, polished concrete floor, and vast windows dressed in floor-to-ceiling sheer curtains bring a sense of minimalist romance into the space. The scheme was completed by David Harrison and Karen McCartney of Design Daily with a curated selection of designer and vintage pieces, crafted predominantly in natural woven materials, cork, and timber.

“We love the easy living and location of the property, despite being on a laneway it is very private. It has been a wonderful, flexible design that has been utilised in a number of ways – whether it be guests, shoots, or architectural evenings. This was not deliberate and came about due to covid restrictions – so, a lovely surprise!”
