Casa Rosada is Chicago-based interior designer Summer Thornton’s soft pink vacation home in Sayulita, Mexico. Designed and built to replace the existing late 20th century home, the designer’s vision was not only to create an escape for her own family, but a luxury rental property with the staff and services to match.
The palette of pink welcomes the exterior warmth into the subtropical home, nestled between the mountainous jungle and Pacific coastline. “It automatically puts you in this fantasy realm,” says Summer, “it’s a place that invites you to lose yourself and follow your dreams.”
The jewel of the property was a grand pair of arched doors, salvaged and reinstated at the entrance to the courtyard which “greets you as if it is the hostess of the house,” says local architect Enrique García.
The central patio is paved in colourful Moroccan tiles and the surrounding concrete walls are plastered in chukum, a traditional Mayan stucco composed of limestone powder and the sap from chukum trees, endemic to the Yucatan region. Resistant to sea salt and fading to a soft patina overtime, the pink hue adds a gentle softness to the residence and pairs playfully with the wider palette of ochre, jade, and muted green.
