The clients enlisted YSG Studio to redesign their home in the tropical surroundings of Australia’s Byron Bay. Seeking to evoke the warmth, tactility, and laid-back ease of the 1970s in their interior, the design called for injections of texture, pattern, colour, and chrome.
“The homeowners wanted the home’s gaze to fix inwards,” says Yasmine Ghoniem, Director of YSG Studio, “creating sensory journeys heightened by the eccentric beats of nostalgia, given their love of 70s design, colour (especially brown), and vintage pieces.”
YSG designed a sunken lounge to remedy the ombré of beige and cream toned porcelain pavers and the unfurnished sliding glass doors which afforded a cold, clinical feeling to the open plan living space. This alteration created breakout spaces within the sprawling living area, doubling the size of the kitchen to accommodate a circular island and enhancing the bench space.
Curtains in Tennessee Tussah by Catherine Martin by Mokum adorn windows in the lounge and master bedroom, imparting a sense of coziness in contrast with the expansive glass and a sense of continuity between the two levels.
“I loved the nubby, textural quality of the fabric given it comprises hand-woven viscose yarns. They’re granted a silky shimmer when natural light filters through their porous surface, highlighting the fabric’s undulating weave.” The drapery’s iridescent quality is reflected in the plum-coloured rug by TAPPETI X YSG, “it’s silky shimmer pairs perfectly with the curtains,” notes Yasmine.
