The homeowners, a Persian painter and an American philanthropist and entrepreneur, enlisted interior designer and builder Tancred Vilucchi of Maison Vilucchi to reimagine their seven-bedroom, nine-bathroom mansion in Brentwood, Los Angeles.
Commencing in December 2019 and working through the pandemic, the clients seized the opportunity to completely renovate their home after extensive flooding was caused by a broken water pipe.
Tired of the existing interior, the design brief specified a mood and feeling rather than a specific style for the late-1980s Mediterranean-style home. “My intention was to create a timeless atmosphere that would combine surrealism, refinement, and fantasy,” says Tancred, seeking to craft a space expressive of the owner’s appreciation for colour and creativity.
“It was quite a challenge as they wanted me to start the project immediately, without time for preparation. I had to improvise and act quickly, bringing fresh and new creative ideas every day, while being flexible and being on site every day.”
In the living space, the natural palette of hardwood floors, muted sage walls, and gilt sheer curtains is accented by opulent details such as the marble hearth and decorative mouldings around the ceiling. The plump Camaleonda sofa, designed by Mario Bellini for B&B Italia, anchors the space in a deep forest green velvet, beneath the grandiose crystal chandelier.
