Inspired by a jewel-toned wall covering seen at Paul+ Atlanta, Elizabeth Joice’s eponymous studio’s design for the Lake Burton Showhouse centres around a celebration of colour and texture.

The primary suite, a perhaps undesirable assortment comprising the primary bath, flexible space, and laundry room appealed to Elizabeth for the creative freedom offered by this trio of connected spaces.

“It was a risk to take on these spaces when we weren’t assigned the primary bedroom, but I saw it as an opportunity to showcase how good design can be all encompassing no matter what is happening in the surrounding rooms,” says Elizabeth.

"When I saw Element and Handloom I was so moved by the richness of colour."

Although the flooring, cabinetry, tiles, and countertops were unable to be changed, the remainder of the space was open to Elizabeth’s creative eye. “I found a textile wall covering by Arte at Paul+ months earlier,” notes Elizabeth, “it became my muse for the flex space which became the ‘writers’ lounge’ and the driver for the designs in the rest of our rooms.”

A palette of ochre, plum, and powder blue was drawn from the wall covering into the wider space. “When I saw Element and Handloom I was so moved by the richness of the colour, and I knew the drape of the fabric would stand strongly against the wall covering without overpowering it. It was the perfect combination to highlight the best features of each product.”
