With a love for cooking, the client’s prioritized heritage and hosting in the renovation of their four-bedroom home, located in the Melbourne suburb of Elsternwick.

Seeking to sympathetically blend modern upgrades with period details, while removing dated Greco-Roman features, the couple enlisted Keen Architecture. Central to the project was the desire to enhance the amount of natural light and create a spacious family home, thus the back of the property was demolished and rebuilt.

Silvia Roldan, Principal Designer of Studio Esar, collaborated with the homeowners to design an interior honouring colour, character, and coming together. Studio Esar specified pieces of furniture from both local and international designers, set against a palette of black and white.

"We love how the fabrics work beautifully together and the soft colours complement the walls and carpet."

Period details such as fluting link the architecture to the lighting and soft furnishings within the interior scheme. James Dunlop’s high-performance draperies Chateau and Envoy II feature throughout the residence, adding subtle texture to the home’s expansive windows. “We were looking for fabrics that felt elegant and would tie in with the period features of the rooms,” says Silvia.

“Our client’s wanted the flexibility of having both a heavy drape to block out light at night and a light sheer to let the morning rays filter through the room, whilst still providing privacy. We love how the fabrics work beautifully together and the soft colours complement the walls and carpet.”
