Interior design duo Hailey McGinty (Interior Designer) and Glenn Wilkinson (Commercial Project Manager) of H&G Designs welcomed their new-born son Lennox with a soothing nursey and master bedroom renovation in Diddillibah, on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

Renovations began after the couple moved into the 30-year-old character home on a small acreage two years ago. When creating the nursery, the pair sought a space that was not only aesthetically appealing but also functional for life with a baby; this required enlarging the room by removing a wall to accommodate a change table.

Thematically, the couple’s surrounding environment and lifestyle dictated the design direction. “Initially, I was thinking of something to suit our property’s native Australian landscaping, chooks, and bees or a nautical theme as we love to spend a lot of time in the ocean. With this in mind I started searching for wallpaper and when I came across this one, I knew the whimsical, magical design was perfect,” says Hailey.

The brown and blue colour palette developed from the wallpaper selection. Hailey painted the half-height wall panelling blue to match the darkest shade in the wallpaper and create a subtle gradient down the wall, while custom powder-coated book ledges and a hanging rail invite a pop of sky blue into the room. A spectrum of brown shades are found in the timber flooring, furniture, handles, tiled benchtop, and the paint selection for the ceiling and additional walls and panelling. “I wanted to keep the palette to two main colours to create a sense of calm whilst mixing a touch of fun.”

“Style wise, I wanted to create a space that both Glenn and I would love spending time in as well as creating a magical space that our son would enjoy as his room growing up.”

The wallpaper and spotted gum flooring set the foundation for the rest of the scheme to evolve; including drapes in Cestino by Mokum which dress the cedar doors and window frames throughout the home. “We wanted a curtain that had some texture and thickness about it to suit the character in the home and a fabric that would create a cosy warm feeling in the space, in a move away from the light sheers we'd previously used in our modern new builds. I hadn't seen this fabric style used before and I love to try out new looks, especially in our own projects. I couldn't love the end result more – these are my favourite curtain selection to date.”

To select the drapery, Hailey worked with window furnishings expert Jan Murphy of Jan Murphy Designs.

Having worked together on a range of personal and professional projects over the past seven years, Jan was the obvious choice to bring their nursery project to life.

“Living on the Sunshine Coast with the relaxed lifestyle and beautiful climate that we enjoy, a high percentage of curtains are light-weight sheers or soft linens that work with the mostly very neutral interiors, but Hailey and Glenn’s home is the total opposite,” says Jan. “The cedar timber doors, windows, and beams called for a thicker, textured fabric to complement it and add that extra layer. Cestino, with its interesting weave design, was the perfect choice and the wave header shows the soft drape of the fabric detail and sits seamlessly in both the nursery and bedroom.”

The warm neutral drapery was selected for its ability to complement both the colourful nursery and the earthen tones found throughout the remainder of the home. In the nursey, linen-print cabinetry offers a subtle nod to the drapes, while the custom powder-coated track in a mix of bronze and wine colours creates contrast. H&G Designs’ own Australian-designed leather handles, shelving, hanging rail, and book ledges complete the nursery.
