Pied-à-Paris Apartment

Seeking to create a ‘weekender’ apartment to use when visiting Melbourne, the client enlisted the expertise of Anouska Milstein of Studio A.mi for her attention to detail and overall conceptual approach to interior design.

To connect the heritage exterior of the Queen Anne Revival style building with the interior, Studio A.mi fused this aesthetic with that of a Parisian Pied-à-Terre. “We wanted the apartment to feel chic but also relaxed,” notes Anouska, “Parisian interior design often tends to feel quite feminine, as is Queen Anne Revival style, so we wanted to play with that binary.”

Countering the boxlike feel of the existing apartment, decorative cornices, millwork, skirting, and architraves were introduced. Thus, transforming the simple space with a dynamic sense of luxury. “For the fixed furniture we looked to French Art Deco design to connect ornament with simplicity, and it was from this that we chose to have burl highlights across our custom pieces.”

The banquette seating is upholstered in Zepel’s high-performance sky-blue velvet atop a burl wood base. “Our client loved the look of the velvet but was concerned about durability with her young daughters and guests, so we ultimately specified a velvet designed with FibreGuard – making it safe for spills.”

“We loved the idea of it feeling very femme, floaty, and powdery, so working with dusty hues made a lot of sense.”

Going against the grain of contemporary interiors to reference the decorative features of the original architecture, the design leans into the Queen Anne Revival style’s affinity for velvet, wallpaper, and patterned curtains.

Embroidered, watercolour-effect curtains in Shalimar by Mokum rest against pale, pink-brown walls, complementing the blue of the banquette seating whilst bringing warmth into the space. “We loved the idea of it feeling very femme, floaty, and powdery, so working with dusty hues made a lot of sense.”

European Oak chevron flooring acts as the design’s foundation. It is brushed with a silver-grey highlight to further soften the space, whilst the green joinery within the built in bar adds a playful touch of high contrast.
